Claude Dean, a World War II veteran who served as chairman of the Jasper County Aeronautics Commission since 1970 and was recognized with the Sgt. Jasper Award in 2013, died Thursday. He was 94.

Dean grew up on Main Street in Ridgeland and served in the Navy. He helped expand Ridgeland’s airport from five airplanes and three hangers to its current 60 airplanes and 49 hangers. He owned a sky blue 1956 Tri-Pacer airplane.

Dean’s passion for airplanes was recognized by the Jasper County Council last year when it passed a resolution to name the Ridgeland Airport in his honor.
