CUB’s 1st Newsletter Edition

Welcome to the introductory issue of CUB News, the periodic, official newsletter of the Jim Hamilton – LB Owens Airport!  Please visit our website to sign up for a free, electronic mail subscription.  We anticipate publication every four-to-eight weeks, depending upon news and activity.
Airport Commission Chairman’s Message – Hello!  I am Stuart Hope, a longtime tenant here at CUB.  I am honored to assume the role of Chairman of the Richland County Airport Commission.  I look forward to working with a great group of Airport Commissioners as well as our Richland County and FBO Airport Staff.  There is a critical mass of activity happening around the airport including activity at City Roots; the Curtiss–Wright Hangar restoration for their new tenant, the Hunter-Gatherer microbrewery; and the ongoing upgrades to Owens Field Park. We intend to make sure we are pulling our weight in making our airport and the surrounding area something we can all be proud of regardless of how we interact with it.  Part of that effort is this airport newsletter which we hope you will find interesting, informative, and enjoyable.
Finally, we hope that you will be able to join us for a Hangar Party for CUB tenants on the afternoon of Saturday, May 13th.  More details are below.
Our next Airport Improvement Program (AIP) Project – Most of the development projects at our airport are chiefly (90%) funded through annual grants awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Another 5% of the funds are provided by the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission (SCAC).  Projects in recent years have included obstruction removal, land acquisition, and fencing.Currently, a design project for the installation of lighted airfield directional signage is underway. This project, which we hope to construct beginning this fall, will help reduce the risk of runway incursions and, thereby, enhance the safety of our airfield; especially to transient pilots during nighttime operations.
Security Tip – At CUB, we enjoy a level of security comparable to commercial carrier airports.  One means of maintaining this high security posture is our procedure for driving through our sliding gates: approach the gate / activate the gate with your Airport ID Badge (AIDB) or the pavement loop / drive through / stop on the other side in order to prevent unauthorized entries by others / wait for the gate to close fully.  That’s what is meant by “No Tailgating.”  Thanks for your cooperation.
87-years young! – April 24, 2017 was the 87th anniversary of the “Dedication Exercises, Owens Field, Columbia, SC, Columbia’s Municipal Airport” (which included a visit by the Goodyear Blimp, NC-7A, Puritan).  The ongoing restoration of the airport’s first permanent structure, the Curtiss-Wright Hangar, makes this anniversary especially exciting.
A micro burst wind event on the evening of March 20 / 21, 2017 took its toll on our windcone.
Thanks to the assistance of the staff of the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission and their electrical contractor, Walker & Whiteside, a new, internally lit windcone was in place and operational by April 14, 2017.
Be our guest!  Please join us at The EAA-242 Sport Aviation Center (SAC) on Saturday, May 13th at 4:00 p.m. for a Hangar Party cookout hosted by the Richland County Airport Commission.  C’mon down and meet your Airport Commission and enjoy some great food and fellowship!
