He will be speaking February 9 to the  from 1:10pm to 2:15pm.  Tom Waskow, Lt Gen USAF (Ret) Chairman Board of Directors, USO of NC “The 9/11 terrorist hijacking and attacks on America’s key business and military centers has become a seminal event in the lives of our generation.  On that morning, as a Major General in the USAF, I was serving as the Director of Operations of the Pacific Air Forces at Hickam AFB in Honolulu, Hawaii.  Little did I know that by 0600 (HST) that morning, I would be designated by the President of the United States as the Joint Force Air Component Commander for Hawaii, Guam and the Federated States of Micronesia. With that title, the President designated me as one of three Air Force Generals who were given the authority to shoot down civilian airliners that had been hijacked.  His guidance was that ‘…You will not allow what happened in New York, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania to occur in your area of responsibility…’   With those mission orders, I had the responsibility to decide, act and prevent a reoccurrence of the tragedy that occurred on that morning.” Come hear “the rest of story” from Gen. SCAA Airport News: Expansion of Ridgeland-Claude Dean Airport is Jan. 17

Expansion of Ridgeland-Claude Dean Airport is Jan. 17 After more than a decade of working with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and the SCAC (South Carolina Aeronautics Commission), three consulting companies, and two proposed locations, the Ridgeland-Claude Dean Airport is officially breaking ground on its expansion 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 17. Dean, a Ridgeland native, was a World War II veteran who served as chairman of the Jasper County Aeronautics Commission. He died last September at the age of 94. The project at the airport (10 Airport Road off Grays Highway) will include a new 4,200-foot runway and convert the current runway into an extended taxiway. The extended runway will allow bigger planes or helicopters to land – essentially it will allow business planes to land in Jasper. The airport expansion has been a soughtafter project. Around 2004, the FAA and SCAC and Jasper County agreed that a larger airport was necessary to accommodate the rapid population and commercial growth the area was experiencing. Originally the plan was to move to a bigger location with less vegetation, but finding a location that passed a fatal flaw analysis and that landowners were willing to sell stalled the project.   To read more click here  ...

SCHAF Newsletter for January 2017-

SCHAF Newsletter for January 2017- Reminder: The next SCHAF Open House will take place Saturday, January 14, 2017. 10am-1pm at Hangar Y-1 Hamilton/Owens Airport. Foundation Happenings-   A very successful open house on Saturday, December 10, 2016.  We were visited by some of the young people who took part in the Young Eagles program sponsored by EAA 242. We were also honored and privileged to be visited by members of the 360th Civil Affairs Unit of the U.S. Army Reserve.  They spent over an hour at Y-1 looking over GF-2 and speaking with SCHAF members and asking questions about the foundation.  A really great bunch of gentlemen.  They expressed a lot of interest in the foundation’s mission of educating people about South Carolina’s aviation heritage and the importance of teaching young people about the contributions and sacrifices of earlier generations.  Thanks to Col. Steve Durst and the troops of the 360th for coming by. Again, a great bunch of folks.   The board of directors of SCHAF did not meet in December.  The next board meeting will take place in January. Would like to mention that the foundation still has number of prints commemorating the Doolittle Raiders for sale.  There are three different prints.  If you would to purchase any of the prints or would like more information please contact Katherine Cuddy. Her e-mail is kcuddy@bellsouth.net .   I’ve made mention in the past couple of newsletters about a really great collection of airplanes donated to SCHAF by the family of Glenn Stackhouse, former professor at the University of South Carolina. Thought everyone would like to see some pictures of the entire collection.     Historical Notes- The world was saddened in December the news of John Glenn’s passing.  I can remember being in grade school and watching Glenn’s historic flight into space.  He was a true American hero who served his country in so many ways.  Here is a remembrance from The Columbus Dispatch. Also photos of his amazing life.  And do you know who his wingman was in the Korean War?  None other than Ted Williams: https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-red-sox/2016/12/08/ted-williams-john-glenn-photo . God speed John Glenn: http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/442900/godspeed-john-glenn . One of the great things about doing the SCHAF newsletter is the feedback from readers.  SCHAF member Franklin Hall sends this in about his first flight. At age five I resolved that when I grew up I would become a fighter pilot. My...
